Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Computer Science
Lesson Topic: Understand what is meant by artificial intelligence (AI)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe what artificial intelligence is and identify its key characteristics.
  • Compare the different types of AI (narrow, general, super‑intelligent) and common AI approaches.
  • Explain how AI learns using a simple linear‑regression example.
  • Evaluate the benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations associated with AI.
  • Apply knowledge by analysing a real‑world AI scenario and suggesting responsible use.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck / printed handout summarising AI concepts
  • Worksheet with AI matching and discussion tasks
  • Laptop with internet access for demo videos
  • Printed diagram of a high‑level AI system architecture
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper for group mind‑maps
Introduction:

Show a short clip of a self‑driving car to spark curiosity. Ask students what they think enables a machine to “think” and link this to prior knowledge about algorithms. Explain that today they will define AI, explore its approaches, and examine ethical issues, with success measured by their ability to classify AI types and discuss impacts.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write a personal definition of intelligence and share examples.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define AI, outline key characteristics, and introduce types of AI using slides.
  3. Interactive matching activity (10'): Students match AI types and approaches to real‑world examples.
  4. Demo (15'): Show a simple linear‑regression model (video or Python notebook) and explain how AI learns from data.
  5. Group discussion (10'): Teams create a mind‑map of AI benefits, challenges, and ethical considerations on flip‑chart paper.
  6. Exit ticket (5'): Each student writes one benefit and one ethical concern of AI on a sticky note.
Conclusion:

Recap the definition of AI, its main approaches, and the ethical issues discussed. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign a homework task: research a current AI application and write a short reflection on its societal impact.
