Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Main hazards: ground-shaking, liquefaction, landslides, tsunami, aftershocks
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the causes and key characteristics of ground‑shaking, liquefaction, landslides, tsunamis and aftershocks.
  • Explain the typical impacts of each hazard on people, infrastructure and the environment.
  • Analyse how magnitude, intensity scales and Omori’s law relate to hazard severity.
  • Evaluate mitigation strategies for each hazard and justify their suitability in different settings.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop with prepared slide deck
  • Printed handout of the hazard summary table
  • World map / regional case‑study worksheets
  • Sand, water, and tray for a simple liquefaction demo
  • Kahoot or similar quiz platform
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper
Introduction:

Begin with a striking video clip of the 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami to capture interest. Ask students what they already know about earthquake‑related hazards and record ideas on the board. Explain that today they will identify the main hazards, understand how they arise, and learn how societies can reduce risk.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Quick recall quiz on plate boundaries and previous seismic events.
  2. Mini‑lecture (15'): Present each hazard with slides – cause, measurement, impacts, and key mitigation.
  3. Case‑Study Analysis (10'): Small groups examine a brief report on the 2011 tsunami, identifying which hazards occurred and why.
  4. Hands‑On Demo (5'): Show liquefaction using sand and water; discuss real‑world implications.
  5. Mitigation Brainstorm (10'): Groups list mitigation measures for each hazard; share ideas and compare with textbook strategies.
  6. Check for Understanding (5'): Kahoot quiz covering terminology, scales, and mitigation concepts.
Conclusion:

Recap the five main earthquake‑related hazards and the most effective mitigation approaches discussed. Students complete an exit ticket stating one new thing they learned and one question they still have. For homework, assign a short research task: find a recent earthquake event and create a one‑page risk‑mitigation plan for the affected community.
