Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: English as a Second Language
Lesson Topic: communicate factual information, ideas and arguments clearly and with expansion
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify task requirements, purpose and audience for a writing prompt.
  • Plan and organise ideas into coherent paragraphs with topic sentences, supporting details and expansion.
  • Use a variety of linking devices to connect ideas and show cause/effect.
  • Write with accurate language, appropriate register and correct grammar/punctuation.
  • Self‑check the final piece against a checklist for completeness and word count.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed sample writing prompts
  • Worksheet with paragraph‑structure template
  • Handout of linking devices
  • Self‑assessment checklist
  • Timer/stopwatch
  • Pens and highlighters
Introduction:
Begin with a quick discussion of why clear, expanded writing matters in exams and real life. Review a short example of a weak paragraph and ask students to spot missing links and expansion. Explain that today they will learn a step‑by‑step process to plan, write and review a cohesive response, and the success criteria will be a completed piece that meets the checklist.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students read a brief prompt and underline key instructions.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Explain task analysis, audience, purpose, and paragraph components.
  3. Planning activity (10') – Brainstorm ideas, group into paragraphs, select linking devices on the worksheet.
  4. Guided writing (15') – Write the first paragraph together, focusing on topic sentence and expansion.
  5. Independent writing (20') – Students produce a 150‑word report using at least three linking devices.
  6. Peer review (10') – Exchange papers and use the self‑check checklist to give feedback.
  7. Teacher feedback & wrap‑up (5') – Highlight common errors and reinforce success criteria.
Conclusion:
Summarise how the planning‑writing‑review cycle improves clarity and expansion. Have students write one sentence summarising their biggest improvement as an exit ticket. Assign homework to rewrite a provided passage using the paragraph structure and linking devices learned.
