Lesson Plan
Grade: 9 Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Spanish
Lesson Topic: In the home (e.g. rooms, living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, furniture and furnishings, garden, household appliances)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe rooms, furniture and appliances using appropriate Spanish vocabulary.
  • Use the verbs hay, estar, tener and gustar correctly in sentences about the home.
  • Compare features of their own home with a classmate’s using comparative structures.
  • Write a coherent paragraph of 80‑100 words describing their house.
  • Participate in oral activities (interview, map labeling) demonstrating comprehension.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed vocabulary handouts (rooms, furniture, appliances)
  • Worksheet for quick grammar practice
  • Floor‑plan template sheets
  • Picture cards of household items
  • Audio recordings of example sentences (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick photo of a typical Spanish‑style living room and ask students to identify objects they see. Review previously learned verbs ‘hay’, ‘estar’, ‘tener’ and the concept of describing location. Explain that today they will expand their home vocabulary and practice using these structures to describe and compare their own houses. Success will be measured by a written paragraph and a spoken interview.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write three things they see in the displayed photo, using any Spanish words they know.
  2. Vocabulary presentation (10'): Teacher introduces rooms, furniture, appliances via slides and handouts, modeling pronunciation.
  3. Grammar focus (10'): Guided practice of “hay”, “estar + preposición”, “tener”, “gustar” with sentence construction on board.
  4. Pair interview (12'): Students ask each other about their homes using the target verbs; switch roles.
  5. Group floor‑plan activity (15'): Groups draw a simple house plan on a template and label rooms and main items in Spanish.
  6. Writing task (10'): Individually write an 80‑100 word paragraph describing their home, incorporating at least five vocab items from each category.
  7. Quick check (5'): Fill‑in‑the‑blank worksheet reviewing verb forms.
  8. Wrap‑up (3'): Teacher recaps key language and collects exit tickets.
Conclusion:
Summarise the main vocabulary and verb structures covered, highlighting correct usage observed during activities. Students complete an exit ticket: one sentence describing their favourite room using hay and estar. Assign homework to create a labelled diagram of their home and write three comparative sentences with a classmate.
