Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: problems linked to business growth
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main financial, managerial, operational, market and legal problems that can arise when a business expands.
  • Explain how these problems can limit growth or cause a business to remain small.
  • Evaluate strategies to mitigate growth‑related problems and sustain expansion.
  • Apply a simple growth‑rate calculation to a case study.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed case‑study handout (including growth‑rate table)
  • Worksheet with problem‑identification tasks
  • Calculator for growth‑rate calculations
  • Sticky notes for group brainstorming
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What would you do if your small shop suddenly doubled its sales?” This activates prior knowledge of scaling. Briefly recap the definition of business growth and its potential benefits. Explain that today’s success criteria are to identify at least three growth‑related problems and suggest one realistic solution for each.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5’) – Students write responses to the poll on sticky notes and share; teacher records common ideas.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define growth, growth rate, and outline reasons businesses expand using a slide.
  3. Exploration (15’) – In pairs, students analyse the case study, calculate the growth rate, and list problems under the five categories.
  4. Group discussion (10’) – Groups present their problem lists; teacher adds missing points and highlights patterns.
  5. Strategy workshop (15’) – Whole‑class brainstorm strategies to overcome each problem category; record on board.
  6. Quick check (5’) – Exit ticket: write one problem and one strategy you would prioritize for a growing business.
Conclusion:

Summarise that growth brings both opportunities and challenges, and effective planning can turn problems into sustainable expansion. Remind students to complete the homework worksheet, which asks them to apply the strategies to a new scenario. Collect exit tickets as the final retrieval practice.
