Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Computer Science
Lesson Topic: Describe the main characteristics of AI
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the eight core characteristics of artificial intelligence.
  • Explain how learning and reasoning differ yet complement each other in AI systems.
  • Identify a real‑world example for each AI characteristic.
  • Evaluate why autonomy and adaptability are critical for emerging AI applications.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Laptop with internet access
  • Printed handout of the AI characteristics table
  • Worksheet for matching examples to characteristics
  • Whiteboard and markers
Introduction:

Begin with a quick video clip showing AI in everyday life to spark curiosity. Ask students what they already know about AI and list ideas on the board. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to name and describe the key traits that make a system “intelligent”.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write a one‑sentence definition of AI on a sticky note; share and refine as a class.
  2. Direct Instruction (10'): Teacher presents the eight characteristics using the handout and projector, highlighting examples.
  3. Guided Practice (12'): In pairs, students complete the worksheet by matching additional real‑world examples to each characteristic.
  4. Think‑Pair‑Share (8'): Discuss differences between learning and reasoning; each pair creates a Venn diagram on the whiteboard.
  5. Mini‑Debate (10'): Groups argue the importance of autonomy vs. adaptability in future AI applications.
  6. Check for Understanding (5'): Quick quiz via Kahoot! covering definitions and examples.
Conclusion:

Recap the eight characteristics and ask a few volunteers to summarize one example each. Students complete an exit ticket stating which characteristic they found most surprising and why. Assign homework: research a recent AI product and write a short paragraph linking it to at least two characteristics discussed.
