Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to edit page layout including page size, page orientation, page margins, number of columns, column width, spacing between columns, set and remove breaks (page, section and column breaks)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose of page size, orientation, margins, columns and breaks in a document.
  • Calculate column width using the page width, margins and gutter spacing.
  • Demonstrate how to set page size, orientation, margins and column layout in a word processor.
  • Insert and remove page, section and column breaks correctly.
  • Apply appropriate layout settings to produce a correctly formatted document.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with word‑processing software (e.g., MS Word or LibreOffice Writer)
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Sample document handout
  • Worksheet with layout calculations
  • Printed reference guide of page‑setting options
  • Internet access for short tutorial video (optional)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick question: “When would you choose landscape over portrait?” Connect this to students’ previous experience creating flyers. Explain that today they will master page layout tools and will be assessed on a mini‑project that meets a set of layout criteria.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5 min) – Students list three situations where page orientation matters; share answers.
  2. Direct Instruction (10 min) – Teacher demonstrates changing page size, orientation and margins using the Layout tab.
  3. Guided Practice (12 min) – Learners adjust these settings on a provided sample document and check against a checklist.
  4. Column Setup (10 min) – Explain column number, width and gutter; students calculate column width with the given formula and apply a two‑column layout.
  5. Breaks Activity (8 min) – Insert page, section and column breaks; peers verify correct placement and practice removing them.
  6. Consolidation Quiz (5 min) – Exit ticket: write three layout elements and a scenario for each.
Conclusion:

Recap the key steps for configuring page layout and inserting breaks. Collect the exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign a homework task to design a one‑page newsletter using the techniques learned.
