Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Information Technology IT
Lesson Topic: Describe malware prevention strategies
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the key technical controls used to prevent malware infections.
  • Explain organisational policies and procedures that support malware prevention.
  • Identify user behaviours that reduce malware risk and demonstrate safe practices.
  • Evaluate a layered defence approach and select appropriate controls for a given scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Slide presentation on malware prevention
  • Handout checklist of prevention strategies
  • Sample phishing‑email examples
  • Computer lab with internet access for live demo
  • Antivirus software demo account (optional)
Introduction:

Begin with a short video clip showing a recent ransomware outbreak to capture interest. Ask learners what they already know about how such attacks can be stopped. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe and apply a layered set of prevention strategies.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Quick Kahoot quiz on common malware types and impacts.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Introduce the layered defence model (technical, organisational, user).
  3. Live demo (15') – Show how to update antivirus definitions and apply a Windows patch.
  4. Group activity (10') – Analyse a case study and map appropriate controls to each layer.
  5. Policy workshop (10') – Teams draft a brief “Acceptable Use” policy paragraph.
  6. Review & exit ticket (5') – Students write one actionable step they will implement at home.
Conclusion:

Recap the three layers of malware prevention and highlight how they work together to reduce risk. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short homework: create a personal device‑security checklist based on today’s strategies.
