Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: English Literature
Lesson Topic: When analysed in reading: the organisation of a text or passage, its shape and development and how this contributes to the readers’ understanding of its meaning and effects.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe how macro‑structure (acts, chapters, stanzas) organizes a text.
  • Identify and analyse key structural devices such as foreshadowing, flashback, parallelism and fragmentation.
  • Explain how the placement of climactic moments influences reader interpretation and emotional response.
  • Apply a structured analytical framework to a 500‑800‑word passage, producing a concise paragraph linking structure to meaning.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts of the structural‑element table
  • Sample passage (500‑800 words) from a prescribed text
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Student notebooks or laptops
  • Sticky notes for quick brainstorming
Introduction:
Begin with a striking excerpt that jumps abruptly between two scenes, asking students what they notice about the shift. Recall that they have already explored narrative voice and theme, linking this to today’s focus on structure. State that by the end of the lesson they will be able to map a text’s shape and explain its impact on meaning.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write on a sticky note one example of a structural device they have seen in a recent reading.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define “structure” and review the key elements (exposition, climax, foreshadowing, etc.) with slide examples.
  3. Guided analysis (15'): Whole‑class walk‑through of the Macbeth act breakdown, modelling how to note macro‑structure and device placement.
  4. Group activity (20'): Each group receives a different 500‑800‑word passage, marks structural divisions, creates a quick outline, and identifies devices.
  5. Share & discuss (10'): Groups present their findings; class evaluates how the structure shapes reader response.
  6. Independent writing (10'): Students compose a short paragraph linking the identified structure to meaning and emotional impact.
  7. Exit ticket (5'): Write one sentence summarising why the chosen structure matters for interpretation.
Conclusion:
Recap the main steps of structural analysis and highlight how each choice guides the reader’s journey. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework: analyse the structure of a selected scene from a prescribed novel, using the checklist provided.
