Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand characteristics of mobile computers including laptop computers, smartphones, tablet and phablet computers
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the form factor, operating system and typical screen size of laptops, smartphones, tablets and phablets.
  • Compare battery life, portability and upgradability across the four mobile computer categories.
  • Explain appropriate use‑cases for each type of mobile computer.
  • Identify key connectivity options and input methods for each device.
  • Evaluate which mobile computer best suits a given task scenario.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed comparison chart / worksheet
  • Sample devices (laptop, smartphone, tablet – if available)
  • Internet access for Kahoot quiz
  • Markers and flip‑chart paper
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which mobile devices do you use every day?” Connect this to prior knowledge about computers and highlight that today’s focus is on how these devices differ. State that by the end of the lesson students will be able to identify key characteristics and choose the most suitable device for a specific task.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students list personal devices and place them into categories on sticky notes.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Define “mobile computer” and introduce the four categories using a slide deck.
  3. Guided comparison (15') – Walk through the characteristic table, highlighting screen size, input, OS, battery life, portability and upgradability.
  4. Group activity (15') – Teams receive a real‑world scenario (e.g., “Create a video presentation”) and decide which device is optimal, justifying their choice.
  5. Hands‑on demo (10') – Show ports and input methods on a laptop and a smartphone; discuss stylus use on tablets.
  6. Check for understanding (5') – Kahoot quiz or exit‑ticket with three short questions covering key characteristics.
  7. Recap & Homework (5') – Summarise main points and assign a worksheet asking students to match tasks with the best device.
Conclusion:

Review the distinguishing features of laptops, smartphones, tablets and phablets, emphasizing how each supports different tasks. Students complete an exit ticket naming one scenario where each device type would be most effective. For homework, they complete a worksheet matching additional scenarios to the appropriate mobile computer.
