Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Effects of changes in globalisation on economic development
Learning Objective/s:
  • Explain how changes in globalisation affect economic development in both developed and developing economies.
  • Analyse the impact of trade restrictions on the flow of goods, services, capital and ideas.
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of increased and reduced globalisation for growth, inequality and sustainability.
  • Compare the differing effects of globalisation on developed versus developing economies using real‑world examples.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • PowerPoint slides with diagrams and case‑study excerpts
  • Handout summarising trade‑restriction types and key indicators
  • World map (physical or digital) showing major trade routes
  • Worksheets for group analysis of case studies (China, UK)
  • Calculator or spreadsheet for simple GDP/ToT calculations
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What products in your daily life come from other countries?” to activate prior knowledge of international trade. Briefly recap the definition of globalisation and introduce today’s focus on how shifts in globalisation influence economic development. Explain that students will be assessed on their ability to describe impacts, compare economies and apply examples.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Students list imported items they use and discuss in pairs.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – Define globalisation and trade restrictions, using slides and the world‑map diagram.
  3. Interactive activity (12’) – Groups examine one type of trade restriction and map its effect on globalisation.
  4. Case‑study comparison (15’) – Analyse China (2000‑2020) and the UK (Brexit) worksheets, noting benefits and drawbacks.
  5. Guided discussion (8’) – Evaluate pros and cons of increased vs reduced globalisation; teacher checks understanding with concept questions.
  6. Exit ticket (5’) – Each student writes one benefit and one drawback of globalisation for a chosen economy.
Conclusion:
Summarise the key ways globalisation shapes economic development and the contrasting impacts on rich and poor nations. Collect the exit tickets to gauge one insight each student gained. For homework, ask students to research a recent trade‑policy change in any country and write a brief paragraph predicting its effect on economic development.
