Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: activities of MNCs
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the definition and key characteristics of multinational corporations.
  • Explain the motives that drive MNCs to expand into developing countries.
  • Identify the main activities MNCs carry out in host economies.
  • Analyse the positive and negative impacts of MNC activities on both host and home countries.
  • Evaluate policy options that host governments can use to maximise benefits and limit drawbacks.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and laptop for slides
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed handouts of the activity table and case study
  • Sticky notes for quick responses
  • Calculator (optional for quick data work)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “Which global brands do you see in your community?” Use the responses to link students’ prior knowledge of trade to the role of multinational corporations. Explain that today they will explore why MNCs operate abroad and what this means for both host and home economies. Success will be measured by their ability to describe activities, assess impacts, and propose policies.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students list three multinational brands they know and share one perceived benefit and one concern.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Define MNCs and outline expansion motives using a slide deck.
  3. Group activity (15'): In small groups, examine a case handout and match MNC activities (FDI, export production, technology transfer, supply‑chain integration, CSR) to real‑world examples.
  4. Impact analysis (10'): Each group fills a two‑column table (positive vs. negative impacts) for host and home countries.
  5. Policy brainstorm (10'): Groups propose one policy for host governments; share ideas on the board.
  6. Whole‑class synthesis (5'): Teacher summarises key take‑aways and checks understanding with a quick quiz (Kahoot or show of hands).
Conclusion:

Recap the main activities of MNCs and their dual‑sided impacts, highlighting how policy can shift the balance. Ask students to write an exit ticket: “One way a host government can ensure MNCs benefit the local economy.” Assign homework to research a recent MNC investment in a developing country and prepare a brief report on its outcomes.
