Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Computer Science
Lesson Topic: Understand what is meant by a uniform resource locator (URL)
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose and function of a Uniform Resource Locator (URL).
  • Identify and explain each component of a URL (protocol, domain name, port, path, query string, fragment).
  • Analyse a given URL and break it into its constituent parts.
  • Construct a valid URL for a specified scenario using appropriate components.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Computer with internet access
  • Printed examples of URLs for labeling
  • Worksheet with URL breakdown activities
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Student devices (laptops/tablets)
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll: “How many different websites did you visit yesterday?” Review that each site is reached via a web address, linking to prior learning about browsers. Explain that today’s success criteria are to name each part of a URL and describe its role.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5'): Students write down a URL they used recently and share it with a partner.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Teacher defines a URL, its purpose, and shows a diagram of its components.
  3. Component breakdown (15'): Walk through the URL parts using the sample URL; students label a printed copy.
  4. Guided practice (10'): In pairs, students construct a URL from a given scenario and present their result.
  5. Quick quiz (5'): Individual written answers to four questions from the source material.
  6. Review & check for understanding (5'): Discuss quiz answers, clarify any misconceptions.
Conclusion:

Recap the six URL components and why each is essential for locating web resources. For the exit ticket, ask each student to write one sentence explaining why the protocol part is crucial. Assign homework: find a URL of their choice, label all its components, and bring the annotated version to the next lesson.
