Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Economics
Lesson Topic: Advantages and disadvantages of real GDP per head and HDI as indicators
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the concept and calculation of real GDP per head.
  • Explain the main advantages and disadvantages of real GDP per head as a development indicator.
  • Identify the three components of the Human Development Index and how it is calculated.
  • Analyse the strengths and limitations of the HDI.
  • Compare real GDP per head and the HDI to evaluate their usefulness in assessing economic development.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Printed handouts with summary tables of advantages/disadvantages
  • Worksheet for comparative analysis
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Calculators (or laptops) for quick calculations
  • Exit‑ticket slips
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: “What do you think makes a country ‘rich’?” Use responses to link prior knowledge of GDP to the need for broader measures. Explain that today’s success criteria are to be able to describe, evaluate, and compare real GDP per head and the HDI.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Short quiz on the definition of GDP and why inflation adjustment matters.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Introduce real GDP per head, show formula, and discuss data sources.
  3. Group activity (10'): Using the handout, list advantages and disadvantages; each group presents one point.
  4. Mini‑lecture (8'): Explain the HDI, its three components, and the simplified formula.
  5. Pair work (8'): Evaluate HDI advantages and disadvantages; record on worksheet.
  6. Class discussion (4'): Compare the two indicators using the comparative summary table.
  7. Exit ticket (5'): Write one strength and one limitation for each indicator.
Conclusion:

Recap the key take‑aways: real GDP per head measures economic output per person, while the HDI adds health and education dimensions. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign homework to research another development indicator (e.g., Gini coefficient or Sustainable Development Index) and write a brief reflection on how it complements the two indicators studied.
