Date: 25/02/2026 |
| Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT |
| Lesson Topic: Be able to format numeric data appropriately including to display the number of decimal places, different currency symbols, percentages |
Learning Objective/s:
- Describe how cell formatting changes the display of data without altering the underlying value.
- Apply decimal‑place, currency, and percentage formats to numeric cells.
- Create and use custom number formats, including colour‑coding negative numbers.
- Verify that formatting does not modify the original numeric values.
|
Materials Needed:
- Computer with spreadsheet software (Excel or Google Sheets)
- Projector and screen
- Worksheet with sample data
- Handout showing screenshots of the Format Cells dialog
- Whiteboard and markers
|
Introduction:
Begin with a quick demonstration of how the same number can appear differently depending on formatting, capturing students' curiosity. Recall that they have previously learned basic cell entry and simple number formatting. Today they will learn to control decimal places, apply currency symbols, percentages, and create custom formats, with success measured by correctly formatting a set of sample values.
|
Lesson Structure:
- Do‑now (5'): Students view a slide of unformatted numbers and note differences (check understanding).
- Direct instruction (10'): Demonstrate the Format Cells dialog – Number, Decimal places, Currency, Percentage.
- Guided practice (12'): Students follow step‑by‑step instructions to format cells A1‑A4; teacher circulates for support.
- Custom format exploration (8'): Show how to create a custom format for red negatives; students apply it to A4.
- Formative check (5'): Display three assessment questions; students answer on an exit ticket.
- Recap & homework (5'): Summarise key steps and assign a worksheet to format additional data for the next lesson.
|
Conclusion:
Review the four formatting options and how each preserves the original value. Students complete an exit ticket stating one new thing they can do with number formats. For homework, they will format a new set of data in their spreadsheet and bring screenshots to the next class.
