Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Biology
Lesson Topic: discuss the consequences of antibiotic resistance and the steps that can be taken to reduce its impact
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the major health, economic, and societal consequences of antibiotic resistance.
  • Explain the mechanisms by which bacteria acquire and spread resistance genes.
  • Identify at least three strategies to reduce the impact of antibiotic resistance and evaluate their effectiveness.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Slide deck summarising key points
  • Handout with case studies of resistant pathogens
  • Short video clip on antibiotic stewardship
  • Worksheets for group activity
  • Markers and chart paper for flow‑chart creation
Introduction:
Begin with a striking statistic about rising deaths from drug‑resistant infections to capture interest. Ask students to recall any recent news stories about “superbugs” to activate prior knowledge. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to describe the consequences of resistance and propose concrete actions to mitigate it.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students write one example of an infection that has become harder to treat and share why it matters.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Present the consequences of antibiotic resistance using slides and the pathogen table.
  3. Group case‑study analysis (12') – In small groups, examine a handout, identify the resistance mechanism and its clinical impact.
  4. Strategy brainstorming (10') – Groups list ways to reduce resistance; ideas recorded on chart paper.
  5. Whole‑class synthesis & video (8' total) – Discuss each strategy, link to stewardship, IPC, and agricultural regulation; show a 3‑minute video on stewardship programmes.
  6. Formative check (5') – Quick Kahoot/exit‑ticket quiz with three questions on consequences and mitigation.
  7. Reflection & homework (5') – Students write a brief paragraph on how they can promote responsible antibiotic use at home.
Conclusion:
Recap the key consequences of antibiotic resistance and the seven mitigation strategies discussed. Use the exit‑ticket responses to gauge understanding, and assign a short homework task: research one emerging antibiotic‑resistance threat and propose a community‑level intervention.
