Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: Transmission, threat to populations and distribution: how influenza (flu) is transmitted and factors influencing its spread
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the main routes of influenza transmission (droplets, aerosols, fomites, direct contact, animal reservoirs).
  • Explain how population density, climate, mobility and immunity influence the spread of influenza.
  • Analyse geographic patterns of flu seasonality and identify factors driving regional differences.
  • Evaluate public‑health interventions that reduce influenza transmission.
  • Apply mapping skills to illustrate flu distribution across regions.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and PowerPoint slides
  • Printed handout of transmission flowchart
  • World‑map worksheets
  • Markers and coloured pens
  • Interactive quiz platform (e.g., Kahoot)
  • Case‑study cards on flu interventions
Introduction:

Begin with a brief news clip of a recent flu outbreak to capture interest. Ask students what they already know about how diseases spread and link this to previous lessons on pathogens. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to identify transmission routes, the factors that shape flu spread, and evaluate control measures.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Quick Kahoot quiz on common disease transmission routes.
  2. Mini‑lecture with slides (10'): Overview of influenza transmission pathways and influencing factors.
  3. Group mapping activity (15'): Using world‑map worksheets, students plot flu seasonality and discuss drivers for each region.
  4. Case‑study analysis (10'): Small groups evaluate a specific public‑health intervention (vaccination, mask‑wearing, school closures) and present findings.
  5. Whole‑class debrief & concept check (5'): Exit ticket – list two key transmission routes and one effective intervention.
Conclusion:

Summarise the main transmission routes and the environmental and social factors that amplify flu spread. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding and assign a short homework task: research the current seasonal flu vaccine recommendations for their country and prepare a one‑page summary.
