Lesson Topic: disadvantages for the country where an MNC is located, e.g. increased competition, environmental damage, exploitation of natural resources, repatriation of profits

  • Describe the main disadvantages that MNCs can cause for host countries.
  • Analyse short‑term and long‑term impacts of increased competition, environmental damage, resource exploitation and profit repatriation.
  • Evaluate how labour and cultural effects contribute to economic and social challenges.
  • Compare these disadvantages with potential benefits to formulate balanced exam arguments.

  • PowerPoint presentation with key points and diagram
  • Handout summarising the disadvantages table
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Sample case‑study excerpts (e.g., Zambia mining, Bangladesh textiles)
 Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What comes to mind when you hear ‘multinational company’?” – students share ideas, highlighting both positives and negatives. Review prior learning on MNC benefits, then state today’s focus on the downsides for host nations. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to list, analyse and evaluate these disadvantages.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – students write three possible drawbacks of MNCs; share; teacher collects misconceptions.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10’) – present the six key disadvantages with PowerPoint and flowchart.
  3. Guided analysis (12’) – in pairs, examine the summary table; answer probing questions on short‑term vs long‑term effects.
  4. Case‑study activity (15’) – groups read a short excerpt (e.g., Zambian copper mining) and identify which disadvantages are illustrated; report findings.
  5. Whole‑class debate (10’) – “Do the disadvantages outweigh the benefits?” – each side presents evidence; teacher notes key points.
  6. Check for understanding (3’) – quick exit ticket: write one disadvantage and one mitigation strategy.
Conclusion:
Summarise the six major disadvantages and how they can hinder sustainable development in the host country. Ask students to complete an exit ticket stating one disadvantage and a possible solution, which will be collected for formative assessment. For homework, assign a brief research task to find a recent news article about an MNC’s impact on a host nation and prepare a short paragraph.
