Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: 3.1 Development: Define and measure development using indicators.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Define development as a multi‑dimensional concept.
  • Identify and explain at least five key development indicators (e.g., GNI per capita, HDI, life expectancy, literacy rate, poverty rate).
  • Analyse the strengths and limitations of each indicator.
  • Calculate the Human Development Index (HDI) using the provided formula.
  • Compare countries using indicator data to classify them as developed, developing, or least‑developed.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Student worksheets with indicator tables
  • Calculator or spreadsheet software
  • Printed sample country data sets
  • Radar‑chart template handout
Introduction:
Begin with a quick poll: “What does development mean to you?” Capture prior knowledge, then explain that today students will explore how development is measured using a range of indicators and learn to calculate the HDI. Success will be shown by correctly interpreting indicator data and completing a short HDI calculation.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students write a definition of development; share ideas; teacher records key points.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Explain why single economic measures are insufficient and introduce the list of development indicators.
  3. Guided practice (12') – In pairs, students match each indicator to what it measures and discuss its strengths and limitations using a provided data table.
  4. HDI calculation workshop (15') – Demonstrate the HDI formula on the projector; students calculate the HDI for a sample country using calculators or spreadsheets while the teacher circulates.
  5. Comparative analysis (10') – Groups rank three countries as developed, developing, or least‑developed based on indicator thresholds and justify their choices.
  6. Quick check (5') – Exit ticket: write one advantage and one limitation of the HDI.
Conclusion:
Recap that development is multi‑dimensional and measured through several indicators, with the HDI offering a composite view but also having notable limitations. Ask students to complete a short reflection for homework on which indicator they consider most important for their local community and why.
