Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Geography
Lesson Topic: 3.3 Industry: Explain types of industry and factors influencing industrial location.
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the four types of industry and give real‑world examples.
  • Explain the key factors that influence industrial location decisions.
  • Analyse how different industries weigh location factors against each other.
  • Compare primary, secondary, tertiary and quaternary sectors in terms of economic importance.
  • Apply knowledge by evaluating a case study of an industry’s location choice.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • PowerPoint slides with industry tables
  • Handout summarising industry types and location factors
  • World map or digital map tool
  • Case‑study worksheets
  • Markers and chart paper for group work
Introduction:

Show a striking image of a city skyline and ask students where different businesses might be located. Recall their previous learning about primary resources and economic activity. Explain that today they will identify industry types and the reasons companies choose specific sites, and they will be able to justify location decisions by the end of the lesson.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5’) – Mini‑quiz: match industry examples to the four sectors displayed on the board.
  2. Teacher input (10’) – Present the four industry types with real‑world examples using slides.
  3. Interactive activity (12’) – In pairs, analyse the “Factors Influencing Industrial Location” table and create a mind‑map of pros and cons for a chosen industry.
  4. Case‑study investigation (15’) – Groups evaluate a short case (e.g., a car factory) and decide which factors were most decisive, recording reasoning on chart paper.
  5. Whole‑class discussion (8’) – Groups share findings; teacher highlights how different sectors prioritize different factors.
  6. Formative check (5’) – Exit ticket: write one factor that would most influence the location of a tech company and explain why.
Conclusion:

Recap that the type of industry determines which location factors are most critical and that trade‑offs are common. Collect the exit tickets summarising a key factor for a chosen sector. For homework, students will research a local business and write a brief paragraph explaining its location choice.
