Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Know and understand school management systems are used to record learner performance including computer aided learning
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the core functions of a school management system.
  • Explain how learner performance data is captured and stored in an SMS.
  • Analyse the role of computer‑aided learning integration in personalising feedback.
  • Use the SMS dashboard to generate simple performance reports.
  • Evaluate the benefits of SMS data for teacher decision‑making.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Computer with internet access
  • Sample school management system demo (sandbox)
  • Worksheets with quiz data extraction tasks
  • Printed handout of SMS module overview
  • Access to a CAL platform (e‑learning site)
Introduction:

Begin with a quick poll: how many learners have you entered marks manually? Discuss the challenges of paper‑based recording and introduce the school management system as a solution. Explain that today’s lesson will explore how these systems capture performance, especially when linked to computer‑aided learning, and outline the success criteria: students will identify key SMS functions and demonstrate how CAL data flows into the system.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑Now (5') – Students list pros/cons of manual grading on sticky notes and share.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Define SMS, core modules, and CAL integration using slides.
  3. Demo (15') – Walk through a demo SMS dashboard, show entering a quiz score from a CAL platform and generating a report.
  4. Guided practice (15') – In pairs, learners map a CAL activity to the appropriate SMS module and record sample data on worksheets.
  5. Check for understanding (5') – Quick Kahoot quiz with three revision questions.
  6. Reflection (5') – Students write one way the SMS can support early intervention on an exit ticket.
Conclusion:

Summarise how an SMS centralises learner data and enhances timely feedback through CAL integration. Ask students to share one insight they gained about data‑driven decision making. Collect exit tickets and assign a homework task to research a real‑world school management system and prepare a brief description of its performance‑tracking features.
