Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Mandarin Chinese
Lesson Topic: Countries, nationalities and languages
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and name at least five countries, their nationalities, and official languages in Mandarin.
  • Construct simple sentences using 我来自, 我住在, 我会说, etc., to describe origin and language ability.
  • Ask and answer questions about nationality and language using target structures.
  • Match countries with the correct nationality and language terms.
  • Write a short paragraph about personal nationality and language proficiency.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed country‑nationality‑language handout (table)
  • Flashcards with country names, nationalities, and language icons
  • Audio recordings of sample sentences
  • Worksheets for fill‑in‑the‑blank and matching activities
  • World map poster for diagram activity
Introduction:
Begin with a quick world‑map poll: ask students to point to a country they have visited or heard of. Review previously learned vocabulary for country and language. Explain that today they will be able to identify countries, state their nationality, and talk about the languages they speak, with success measured by accurate sentence construction in the practice activities.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students label a blank world map with countries from the handout.
  2. Vocabulary review (10'): Teacher projects flashcards; students match Mandarin terms to English meanings and practice pronunciation.
  3. Table exploration (10'): Pairs use the printed table to match countries, nationalities, and languages; discuss sample sentences.
  4. Guided sentence construction (10'): Whole‑class builds sentences using 我来自…, 我会说…; teacher models and checks pronunciation.
  5. Interactive practice (15'): Role‑play – students ask each other “你来自哪个国家?” and “你会说什么语言?” and record responses.
  6. Written task (10'): Individual worksheet – fill‑in‑the‑blank and write three personal sentences.
  7. Consolidation (5'): Quick quiz (e.g., Kahoot) to verify understanding.
Conclusion:
Summarise that students can now correctly name a country, its nationality, and the language in Mandarin and use the target structures in conversation. Collect exit tickets where each learner writes one sentence about their own nationality and language. Assign homework to create a mini‑poster of another country with its Mandarin terms.
