Grade: Date: 25/02/2026
Subject: Information Communication Technology ICT
Lesson Topic: Be able to set line spacing including single, 1.5 times, double, multiple, spacing before and after paragraphs
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the purpose of line spacing and paragraph spacing in document formatting.
  • Apply single, 1.5, double, and custom line spacing settings in common word processors.
  • Set and adjust spacing before and after paragraphs using point or line values.
  • Evaluate the visual impact of different spacing choices on document readability.
Materials Needed:
  • Computer with internet access.
  • Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice Writer.
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard.
  • Sample text document for practice.
  • Handout summarising spacing options.
Introduction:

Begin with a quick visual of a paragraph that looks cramped and another that looks too airy, asking students which is easier to read. Recall that they have already learned basic paragraph formatting and font styles. Explain that today they will master line and paragraph spacing and will be able to judge the best settings for any document.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students examine a poorly spaced paragraph and list three problems.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Clarify line spacing vs. paragraph spacing and demonstrate menu locations in Word, Google Docs, and LibreOffice.
  3. Guided demo (15'): Teacher formats a sample text using single, 1.5, double, and a custom multiplier; then adds spacing before and after paragraphs.
  4. Independent practice (15'): Pupils apply the learned settings to their own document and answer worksheet questions on spacing calculations.
  5. Check for understanding (5'): Quick quiz – calculate line height for given multipliers and describe steps to set custom spacing.
Conclusion:

Review how appropriate line and paragraph spacing improves readability and professionalism. Ask a few students to share the spacing choices they made and why. Collect exit tickets where each learner records one spacing setting they will use in future work, and assign a short homework task to re‑format a provided paragraph using three different spacing options.
