Lesson Plan
Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Chemistry
Lesson Topic: Draw and interpret the displayed formula of a molecule to show all the atoms and all the bonds
Learning Objective/s:
  • Draw displayed (structural) formulas for organic molecules showing every atom and covalent bond.
  • Interpret displayed formulas to count atoms, determine implied hydrogens, and write the correct molecular formula.
  • Identify functional groups within displayed formulas and assign the appropriate IUPAC name.
  • Apply valency rules to verify that drawn structures are complete and chemically accurate.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Printed worksheets with displayed formulas and practice questions
  • Handout of common functional groups
  • Molecular model kits (optional)
Introduction:
Begin with a quick visual puzzle: show a simple displayed formula and ask students what molecule it represents. Review that they already know condensed formulas and basic valency. Explain that by the end of the lesson they will be able to draw and fully interpret displayed formulas, a key skill for exam questions.
Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students convert a given molecular formula to a displayed formula on mini‑whiteboards; teacher circulates to check accuracy.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Using the projector, review displayed vs. condensed formulas, valency rules, and functional‑group symbols.
  3. Guided practice (12') – Whole‑class walkthrough of the ethanol example, modelling each interpretation step while students follow on their worksheets.
  4. Collaborative activity (15') – Small groups receive three new molecules (propan‑1‑ol, acetone, acetic acid); they draw displayed formulas, count atoms, identify functional groups, and write IUPAC names. Teacher provides immediate feedback.
  5. Quick check (5') – Exit ticket: one displayed formula to interpret and name independently.
Conclusion:
Recap the four‑step process for interpreting displayed formulas and highlight how it links to functional‑group identification and naming. Collect exit tickets to gauge understanding, and assign a worksheet with three additional molecules for homework, to be completed before the next class.
