Grade: Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: Business Studies
Lesson Topic: recommend and justify an appropriate distribution channel for a given situation
Learning Objective/s:
  • Describe the role of place and distribution channels in the marketing mix.
  • Analyse product, market, and company factors to evaluate channel options.
  • Compare direct, indirect, and coverage types using cost‑benefit criteria.
  • Recommend a suitable distribution channel for a given product and justify the choice.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector or interactive whiteboard
  • Printed worksheet with product scenario and cost‑benefit table
  • Whiteboard markers
  • Sample product images (e.g., smartwatch)
  • Laptops/tablets for group research
  • Channel coverage handout
Introduction:

Start with a quick poll asking where students usually purchase tech gadgets. Review the concept of “place” in the marketing mix and how distribution channels link products to customers. Explain that today they will use a step‑by‑step process to recommend a channel and will be assessed on a clear justification.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5') – Students list where they bought their last electronic device (engagement).
  2. Mini‑lecture (10') – Recap direct vs. indirect channels and coverage types (intensive, selective, exclusive).
  3. Guided analysis (15') – In pairs, use the worksheet to analyse the smartwatch scenario: product type, target market, company resources.
  4. Group brainstorming (10') – List possible direct and indirect routes and decide on the appropriate coverage.
  5. Cost‑benefit comparison (10') – Complete a simple table comparing three channel options.
  6. Recommendation & justification (10') – Each group writes a concise recommendation with justification using the discussed factors.
  7. Whole‑class share & feedback (10') – Groups present; teacher highlights key criteria and corrects misconceptions.
Conclusion:

Summarise that selecting a distribution channel requires balancing market reach, control, and cost. Students complete an exit ticket stating the best channel for the smartwatch and one supporting reason. For homework, they research a real brand’s distribution strategy and prepare a short report.
