Lesson Plan
Grade: 10 Date: 17/01/2026
Subject: English as a Second Language
Lesson Topic: produce responses using a range of grammatical and lexical structures
Learning Objective/s:
  • Identify and use complex sentence structures (subordination, relative clauses) in spoken responses.
  • Apply appropriate modal verbs, conditionals, and passive voice to convey nuance.
  • Incorporate a range of linking words and idiomatic expressions to organise ideas.
  • Produce a coherent spoken answer to interview, picture‑description, role‑play, or discussion tasks within the allotted time.
Materials Needed:
  • Projector and screen for sample videos.
  • Printed worksheets with grammar and lexical tables.
  • Cue cards with speaking prompts (interview, picture sets, role‑play scenarios).
  • Audio recorder or smartphones for self‑assessment.
  • Whiteboard and markers.
Introduction:

Begin with a quick “guess the structure” game to spark interest. Review students’ recent speaking practice and remind them of the exam’s success criteria: range, accuracy, and fluency. Explain that today they will deliberately embed targeted grammar and lexical items into four common speaking tasks.

Lesson Structure:
  1. Do‑now (5'): Students write one complex sentence and one linking phrase on a sticky note; share quickly.
  2. Mini‑lecture (10'): Review key grammatical structures and lexical resources with examples on the projector.
  3. Modelled response (10'): Teacher demonstrates a full interview answer, highlighting the use of each target structure.
  4. Paired practice (15'): Learners choose a cue‑card task, plan (2'), then perform a 1‑minute spoken response while partner notes language use.
  5. Feedback cycle (10'): Whole‑class listening of selected recordings, peer‑feedback using a checklist, and teacher correction.
  6. Reflection (5'): Students record one strength and one area to improve for homework.
Conclusion:

Summarise how the targeted grammar and lexical items enhanced the clarity and sophistication of the spoken answers. For the exit ticket, each student writes a 30‑second response to a new prompt, using at least two of the structures practiced. Homework: complete the worksheet by creating two original interview questions and answering them with the learned structures.
